“Anxious Parenting, An Historical Perspective”

Presented by Dr. Peter Stearns, Sponosred by The Vermont Center for Family Studies:

October 28, 2011

HHnewsdec112 Dr. Peter Stearns, Provost of George Mason University and author of Anxious Parents, A History of Modern Childrearing in America presented a fascinating lecture on the current style of anxious parenting, how it has evolved and the effect on our children. “Winds of societal emotion affect parenting behavior just as winds affect sails. In a dynamic and entertaining style, Dr. Stearns, a parenting historian, explained how we are currently swirling in a storm of anxious parenting, where children are viewed as fragile rather than resilient”

“This subject is directly relevant to family theory. Dr. Murray Bowen articulated a precise manner whereby parental anxiety weakens children. His theory points a way for parents to strengthen their children by sailing into this wind”.
